The frogs are feeling it too, and have turned up the volume to maximum. Nothing stands in the way of their reproductive imperative and the party continues unabated even when my dog crashes in for a swim. So with natures concerto in full swing, I get to unpack my pastels for the first time this year. What a colourful jumble of joy, they are, ready to go. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Sonic, the dog, is not so happy. I won't let him roam when I am otherwise occupied. There is just too much 'out there' including coyotes, lots of coyotes, so I keep him close. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I'm not sure if this one is finished, it's a little 10x10 in oils. Shortly before thing came home, I had been going to the woods several times a week to spend a few hours in the woods with oil pastel. I was getting to like it. I was dogless at the time, or with elderly grandlady dog, and old dogs are like cats, they want rest and sleep and quiet companionship. They make excellent artist's companions. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Thing was a distruption.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Oh my,</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">firecracker.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">We named him Sonic.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">He is,</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">and also </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Super.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">But taking my oil pastels to the woods and sitting down for hours, well, that didn't feel like an option any more, and hadn't felt like an option for such a long while I forgot all about it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So it's fitting that on my first revisit of plein air oil pastel I should bring him along, and somehow let him work himself into the painting.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It was a little distracting having a dog at my side, but he was a really good boy, I managed to get something done, and then we played frisbee. If the weather doesn't turn ugly, I will do this again. I was rusty, I forgot techniques learned, and equipment. Looking forward to the next time. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSA8o0e_DvE62vNoNUSRjFndgLJo6b6YYzBA-FEgapAucz3MMLCVZ-hv_RCAZHmBKAPJAeCPn53dCzEwYpeHLQUzldYETGMm6r-GUGaciBZFTAVChpK5Cq2EBsjeByjvk2GIEDuKriqvtM/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2736" data-original-width="3648" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSA8o0e_DvE62vNoNUSRjFndgLJo6b6YYzBA-FEgapAucz3MMLCVZ-hv_RCAZHmBKAPJAeCPn53dCzEwYpeHLQUzldYETGMm6r-GUGaciBZFTAVChpK5Cq2EBsjeByjvk2GIEDuKriqvtM/" width="320" /></a></div><br />And here's what I finished 'in studio'</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid7owqpVR89ReF5wLG7qphYZVG7KAjf-LAEmyCItyNCoBQkol6MT-xW_7UyLaqSQ8fVjw-iTjziYwjJ5d2gtVI25W6XNxuXkIFP026QEdLHKzKhIgfsW9NBSf_Z0PHdHZxl8PbPeehjCQj/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2736" data-original-width="3648" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid7owqpVR89ReF5wLG7qphYZVG7KAjf-LAEmyCItyNCoBQkol6MT-xW_7UyLaqSQ8fVjw-iTjziYwjJ5d2gtVI25W6XNxuXkIFP026QEdLHKzKhIgfsW9NBSf_Z0PHdHZxl8PbPeehjCQj/" width="320" /></a></div><br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /> <p></p>kaslkaoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04041865957191874234noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694854491328172740.post-53799060207645229582021-10-19T10:23:00.002-04:002021-10-19T10:23:38.541-04:00Attempts at Decluttering are not going well<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /> So I decided it's time to clean up the studio, go through those piles and start tossing things out. It did not go well. I found these. Way back before I got my current firecracker of a dog, (Mr Sonic, that's you) I used to go out and park my butt somewhere for a few hours and work with oil pastels. <p></p><p>#1</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghco8GnyuAqn_R7bVWpcZaFUlT-52QJNYndltMAhKge3DfxFwSn00HmRdz66hmyf4hNePNLZ3DSkwHZ8yV9H1B7XbRbtYzjJywgPFsKm1R_26kXcMcNoUPVRpW3o1q0E8k-4xL5JKYMcOH/s2048/20211019_095721.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghco8GnyuAqn_R7bVWpcZaFUlT-52QJNYndltMAhKge3DfxFwSn00HmRdz66hmyf4hNePNLZ3DSkwHZ8yV9H1B7XbRbtYzjJywgPFsKm1R_26kXcMcNoUPVRpW3o1q0E8k-4xL5JKYMcOH/s320/20211019_095721.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>I don't know what to do with them, but I can't throw them out. #4 is a work in progress. Basic technique was to layer on the oil pastel to the point of saturation, scrape off the excess, work in some more, repeat until the surface was glossy--they glow like glass. I love that. Very messy indoors, those flakes get in everywhere.</p><p>#2</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrbCRx52Jmd-J8zA5JDBW1aokv9-YuK1lLnm_MrD7iM5uGDmRWJ1T5o6Axes2wdX7ElRyph5Ry9oFUcgHYsTHFpAEv4cB3ZS5ZcHJyvFyo5jdynmKBPes4LEWVhZzGoAeIQ5D1QZsVD3Z5/s2048/20211019_095732.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrbCRx52Jmd-J8zA5JDBW1aokv9-YuK1lLnm_MrD7iM5uGDmRWJ1T5o6Axes2wdX7ElRyph5Ry9oFUcgHYsTHFpAEv4cB3ZS5ZcHJyvFyo5jdynmKBPes4LEWVhZzGoAeIQ5D1QZsVD3Z5/s320/20211019_095732.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>#3</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj47dbMzcoAhgoojstTrKC8NRdr20spmuq6l5U2JnbZpocZVc2PXKAUexAIT07bmCZbyTpvm1Ts8h0xq9d-pRCKnHDmUexWPOD3x2mtsTKWJqVJeQsHXayO52ptEkDzAJxjKM_c9iwMfb_2/s2048/20211019_095652.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj47dbMzcoAhgoojstTrKC8NRdr20spmuq6l5U2JnbZpocZVc2PXKAUexAIT07bmCZbyTpvm1Ts8h0xq9d-pRCKnHDmUexWPOD3x2mtsTKWJqVJeQsHXayO52ptEkDzAJxjKM_c9iwMfb_2/s320/20211019_095652.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><br /></div><p>#4</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM0kEnJj17-Ow_kyWjGzv-rlTPgCqEpMwcbGSmLPy_zopFeW-28foRmEKtCq6Pp_YYsXpdnXHI30Ty9hCDHJqDG5VNEFaR2s4DuBztitCPYuFvoTd31PF2omz638XLgT8XGRr6iAwkxvwL/s2048/20211019_095638.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM0kEnJj17-Ow_kyWjGzv-rlTPgCqEpMwcbGSmLPy_zopFeW-28foRmEKtCq6Pp_YYsXpdnXHI30Ty9hCDHJqDG5VNEFaR2s4DuBztitCPYuFvoTd31PF2omz638XLgT8XGRr6iAwkxvwL/s320/20211019_095638.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>kaslkaoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04041865957191874234noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694854491328172740.post-6291236209767055392021-08-24T08:25:00.000-04:002021-08-24T08:25:18.356-04:00The Art of Making Art Part II<p>I've only recently started taking painting seriously, printmaking was more my thing, but I noticed that the more I painted, the longer I took to finish, or even start, the next one. I was freezing up, as usual.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0o_9fgwI8Mu-N8tbAA6W1Wif_A_CNHJ96lozd7YdYrDkJK-jvD2SjUdLGdjGrPHq4l7C9q7Oku13SPR9XS34VHR9x7vPZXiwUPuJV7xQ6hxAiAEBa5Hw3xBW-5rswblM_Yc3tHilo_Jv2/s2048/IMG_20210817_190037_118.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0o_9fgwI8Mu-N8tbAA6W1Wif_A_CNHJ96lozd7YdYrDkJK-jvD2SjUdLGdjGrPHq4l7C9q7Oku13SPR9XS34VHR9x7vPZXiwUPuJV7xQ6hxAiAEBa5Hw3xBW-5rswblM_Yc3tHilo_Jv2/w320-h320/IMG_20210817_190037_118.jpg" title="acrylic on card, fishy with bright colours, make art fast & love it" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>I started out painting rocks, which are mostly free, but the more I appreciated their rock-ness, and the harder I toiled to quarry in the wild for ever bigger rocks, the more tied up I became.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9BB6aS9TSAC_JeVX4o0GxMEEWIVb-q9exN2LlSMOfg2BicYhlWifZW71pYOi_iIuPkc4iOXXouQK00V_4zbnZm5NZ2ZzuDZXeCqRWA3qDM8rcz0d2iThna2DLegHFE4sl62BPzM2eVrmm/s2048/20210702_093505.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9BB6aS9TSAC_JeVX4o0GxMEEWIVb-q9exN2LlSMOfg2BicYhlWifZW71pYOi_iIuPkc4iOXXouQK00V_4zbnZm5NZ2ZzuDZXeCqRWA3qDM8rcz0d2iThna2DLegHFE4sl62BPzM2eVrmm/w320-h320/20210702_093505.jpg" title="Cat, acrylic on rock, now homed in my garden, it's a big rock and took muscle to get home, I spent way to long nitpicking and staring at this one" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>So then I tried scrap wood, which turned into, for me, yet another limited resource.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg47VSkVDa_FEnCOT0IL8xStHak1mRYI6-Gjz8nkVXEflPqGE978CAZxE9DI1cJ_axHZ7hfNQp-9GFGFso0G1Va8Y-OyI4w7sApjJKw0JjSRW5xqeMS7Q9hRewiJyUNYyTOLKt4yiJJJ_fs/s2048/20210810_141732.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="dog art" border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg47VSkVDa_FEnCOT0IL8xStHak1mRYI6-Gjz8nkVXEflPqGE978CAZxE9DI1cJ_axHZ7hfNQp-9GFGFso0G1Va8Y-OyI4w7sApjJKw0JjSRW5xqeMS7Q9hRewiJyUNYyTOLKt4yiJJJ_fs/w320-h320/20210810_141732.jpg" title="trying out some sidewalk chalk for free and fun experience" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>So now I settled onto upcycling a deck of cards. That's 52 miniature paintings, that's a lot colour mixing, composition, texture and drawing experimentation with negligible costs in terms of resources. I can do this. I figure, by the time I'm finished the last one, I should have, to some degree, 'my style' as realized in acrylic paint. After which, I will revisit painting on larger surfaces. I just needed to know if the nitpicking I was doing was a necessary part of my developing painting style, or if it was a barrier to getting to the good stuff.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJDe3CMkF74pmABF8Ax0eBjHzxDjWyuQc9636MkiWXp6zOIFdMCkrRE02Vh2gK_n2_n-1kgkCx6I1HxNY7AzX4dfhejI2LDprXeZRBbnumqJXXiJ7RqhZ_w5PFg9j4aluIKtCAxh5vqctn/s1080/IMG_20210620_091230_013.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJDe3CMkF74pmABF8Ax0eBjHzxDjWyuQc9636MkiWXp6zOIFdMCkrRE02Vh2gK_n2_n-1kgkCx6I1HxNY7AzX4dfhejI2LDprXeZRBbnumqJXXiJ7RqhZ_w5PFg9j4aluIKtCAxh5vqctn/w320-h320/IMG_20210620_091230_013.jpg" title="I love this one, but I need to venture and find out, is this my style, or is it an anomaly" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>The advice is, once again, find out what holds you back. Keep making art. It doesn't have to be good art, in fact, it's really great to make bad art, and keep doing it, but change it up if you don't like it.</p><p>Make art fast, set a timer, Go! Speed eliminates all the details, the nitpicking, the erasures, you may love or hate what ends up on the page but you'll probably start seeing something that looks different from all the others in the same way your handwriting (and if you don't handwrite, learn how, it's a fine motor skill, looks good, and you can scribble meaningfully (or cryptically) all over your art.</p><p>Go under budget. Nothing like making a big investment to create the Monster we call Fear of Failure (unless money is no object, but it usually is). For me, I got myself restarted with 'used on one side' office paper, in other words, garbage. It was freeing, because, no matter what I put on the page, it would still be garbage (actually, recycling) which was awesome, because it meant I could do nothing wrong. I went through reams of paper drawing really boring awful things like stickmen, and copying from books. It might seem weird to say, copy other peoples art, when talking about achieving a style, but it is a learning process. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik5DblERUaYRKgEUxcF3sEZ_H36APlYQwlsAMF0IeAJAF4hG4BYeQboEjOsAQr6-4gNDBef8nQ96NhA-sgR6SZ5NMmk2mioF8woYMEvcQI2_sMUindNsRm211vzbgfq9YZDSTl9jrrz0mT/s2048/20210728_085052.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik5DblERUaYRKgEUxcF3sEZ_H36APlYQwlsAMF0IeAJAF4hG4BYeQboEjOsAQr6-4gNDBef8nQ96NhA-sgR6SZ5NMmk2mioF8woYMEvcQI2_sMUindNsRm211vzbgfq9YZDSTl9jrrz0mT/w320-h320/20210728_085052.jpg" title="Ballpoint pen,small sketchbook, an 'I don't know what to draw and this is what popped out' page" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>Copy a lot of art, art you love, art you hate, art that will never speak for you, art you will never show anyone, see what sticks. It's a people place, people cycling, hiking, fishing, swimming, having picnics on the beach and playing on the sand. There is a railway overhead with trains that rush in and gone like bullets, but there are wild things too, bluebirds and cliff swallows, mice and voles, geese and swans, turtles and salmon, everything, and room all. While walking in the forest, we got caught in a storm, not the usual soft summer rain, but a sky darkening deluge. I was fine, I don't mind, but Sonic went on strike, by which I mean, after 10 minutes of being pelted by heavy rain, he walked off the trail and refused to move. I could have made him move, and that would make sense. The only way out of the rain was onwards, but instead I sat down with him, with rain pouring all around us and realized that he was really freaked out, panting, pupils dilated. I couldn't stop the rain, I but I could wait with him, and that's what I did. In a short few minutes he was ready to move on, and that's what we did. It was still raining, but he was fine, he knew I'd wait if he needed me to. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisvzeqbIv9aT8pfyshm2cJ2HNLXoR5qcEPw-c25AlWqhwtAxs65Lv9G2xcJhAfGw4rQ-l_K3TkbQ5mD03H-mz5LM0HYXA2OafUF-G7Q4KgqZD-m0UMzpXm9gEk1isD4dNHYzHBJiJABYj3/s1080/IMG_20210713_131729_915.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisvzeqbIv9aT8pfyshm2cJ2HNLXoR5qcEPw-c25AlWqhwtAxs65Lv9G2xcJhAfGw4rQ-l_K3TkbQ5mD03H-mz5LM0HYXA2OafUF-G7Q4KgqZD-m0UMzpXm9gEk1isD4dNHYzHBJiJABYj3/s320/IMG_20210713_131729_915.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><br /> </p>kaslkaoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04041865957191874234noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694854491328172740.post-42676097075627408022021-07-14T09:36:00.001-04:002021-07-17T16:43:34.344-04:00Sketchbook 2021 Strange Animals and other Delights<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGAJgEyTHWfeG6g48SUkJhfxvcu3T5ckEoAwsgDtu5d6npirgzNhjyp0fM-Kst-6CREM93HvGpmdctwS6SNwT0oT06Zbs6bRwIhxr5Fj2KX6aDYihDubhvAf_R7eM4tPx1sPXJgIP3hGSQ/s2048/IMG_20210415_085023_276.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGAJgEyTHWfeG6g48SUkJhfxvcu3T5ckEoAwsgDtu5d6npirgzNhjyp0fM-Kst-6CREM93HvGpmdctwS6SNwT0oT06Zbs6bRwIhxr5Fj2KX6aDYihDubhvAf_R7eM4tPx1sPXJgIP3hGSQ/s320/IMG_20210415_085023_276.jpg" /></a></div>"this book begins it's journey..." 1st drawing, new sketchbook! I don't where or how my art intersects with this. I know it comes from within, I know it comes from a place over which I have no control, which is frustrating. Sometimes I leave my camera behind, on purpose. On Saturday I took so many photos my husband compared our ski run to riding the subway at rush hour--I was stopping so much. So for Sunday I left my camera at home. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So I had to see with my own eyes. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And think with my own eyes, </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">and remember with my own brain, </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">and tell in my own words, </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">and show in my own pictures. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And that last is the most important exercise that cannot be down with electronics in hand...to ask oneself, what is so important about this particular moment in place and time that I feel the need to share it with the world? That is the question to consider, and reflect on, and with pen and paper, to distill that moment with whatever lines/scratches and symbols that you can. And if you do that, you will learn something, about yourself, your environment, about what is important to you, what is meaningful to you. So try it sometime, leave that camera/device at home, feel the frustration of desperately wanting to share your moment, that beautiful thing, that joyful thing, momentous thing, and memorize it, and later, much later, find a way to do that, with your own words, or images if you are so inclined.<br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We were out for three hours, and covered a lot of ground from deep forested valleys into open rolling hilltops that gave us a view. The wildlife, I knew, just lurking out of sight, the people scattered enjoying the outdoors, the Great Lake on the horizon, full of fish, flanked by industry, <b>and the sun, the glorious sun that fuels everything before and during and after. <--</b>and this last tidbit, I'll be saving for later, because before I wrote that, I had no idea why I keep putting the sun into my pictures.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b></b></div><p style="text-align: left;"></p><p style="text-align: left;"></p><p style="text-align: left;"><br /> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">for enquiries please contact me here in comments </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">or follow me on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kaslkaos/" target="_blank">instagram</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a contextmenu="fcltHTML5Menu1" href="https://www.facebook.com/KaslkaosArt">facebook page<br /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://twitter.com/KaslkaosArt" target="_blank">twitter </a></div><p></p>kaslkaoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04041865957191874234noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694854491328172740.post-3537442517698213642020-12-19T09:14:00.000-05:002020-12-19T09:14:42.370-05:00First Flight<p> --we all need a little help. Lead by example, follow those that elevate.</p><p>First Flight began as a conversation with a very creative friend on social media. I realized that I stylize all but the human animal with ease, but I have difficulty with homo sapiens. I know it means I need more practice, both realism (life sketches or right now, from books) and actually drawing them in my style, but she noted that humans are naked and have neither fur nor feathers---sooooo I said I would put feathers on the human. This sketch is what turned up when I set my mind to do just that.<br /></p><p> </p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxfd4AZySBhi2DyvbkXY_VvXbb-l7sa_7Vumd_tRwi3_FsEnXHrORLUpjyb7qH0TbwqiuKQXXnWJG3z8alTSqZHgkEoaa7ebYwQvnLLDOJmkgQbiowHXciEpMhCM97tcbriQTgqFd8gcz2/s2048/artflow_202012160817.png" style="margin-left: 1em; It's the New Year, and it's time to take my art more seriously again. Last year, a slip and slide on the ice took me out for a few months from doing much of anything, but led me back into drawing, and art for art's sake, my sketchbook. Sometimes I share my work, sometimes I don't. Much remains hidden. For the longest time, I thought, wouldn't it be a good idea to record the finished books via video, but could not come up with the logistics of how to mount a camera while I flip pages, or should I do a slide-show, or or or... I suffer from this sort of ambivalence. There is probably a named syndrome for this, but to cut the whining short, who knew, hand-held with a powershot in one hand, while the other hand flips pages works just fine, really fine. Now I still have to decide if the sound of crisply flipped pages with whatever is going on in the background (usually CBC radio & cats) is better than silence or picking a youtube supplied song. More decisions, but I'll just pop these out there regardless.<br />
<br />
Recently on FB, a friend (and pardon me for not remembering who) shared a meme, "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing poorly rather than not all". This will be my motto for 2020, to keep doing, to keep going, to keep trying and work harder, and not use perfection or defeatism as an excuse to do nothing. So please pardon my mess, my misteeks, while I try to fix my indecision problem.<br />

Just celebrate, Winter's dark (well, it is in varying degrees depending on how far North you live) so a change in routine, a feast, some light, is highly recomended. Even better, get together with people, with family, with friends, with strangers.<br />
We do the traditional thing, the sacrificial tree, which I hear, hits the right environmental notes. We live in Christmas Tree land, here there is a tree farm around every corner, making our tree locally grown and likely organic to boot, not on purpose, but because the trees they grow themselves with little intervention. This farm was just a farm, not a commercial grower. This one is wide and unclipped and grew on the peak of a windy hill. We love the adventure.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Christmas here, is also a time for friendship, when it's okay to say 'I love you' to friends who are not your relatives, and hugs go to everybody.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpGhIP-pkFRNCrOr98yfbCeU8kB6Hzu0lNzabQnwZI2yNTZiVQV0vltjKeLYjtLMejh5A8plVJDCf3K-dinaEBib0NPhcz6tyNcjsBc-cSveheMbKvePkGxzFh0iyD06FtkAaorpBFiyeK/s1600/20191214_203440.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpGhIP-pkFRNCrOr98yfbCeU8kB6Hzu0lNzabQnwZI2yNTZiVQV0vltjKeLYjtLMejh5A8plVJDCf3K-dinaEBib0NPhcz6tyNcjsBc-cSveheMbKvePkGxzFh0iyD06FtkAaorpBFiyeK/s320/20191214_203440.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I love visiting the Long Term Care home, well always, but especially now, when people are extra lovely, stopping by for a chat, and our relationship with our friend gets extra real. We also get to spend extra time with family, and I confess, I also enjoy the extra time for winter sports.<br />
And food, who doesn't love food; chocolate is very high on my list.<br />
<br />
My husband decorates the tree, from start to finish.<br />

<br />
Usually, once we've wrestled it through the door, and this one did require some wrestling, it's huge, and have it standing straight up and down (takes team work) I am encouraged to dissappear with the dog. If I'm gone long enough, I come home to see it looking like this. He places every ornament with care. My mother used to do this. When I was very small, she would set it all up while I was sleeping and it would appear like magic in the living room. One year, she put little candles (real ones) on the tree, and very briefly lit them. It was magic, and scary. I still have the clip-on aluminum candle holders, somewhere, they must heirlooms now, but I would never be brave or foolish enough to light them; I'll settle for the artificial glow of the led's.<br />

<i>Choosing Analogue:</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 12.8px; font-style: italic;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i style="font-size: 12.8px;"><i>So
I was at the theatre (Taj Express was AWESOME!) and I'm one of those
peeps that always wants a something in hand, in case I get bored. I'm
pretty much like everyone else that fills up all their moments scrolling
through screens. I deliberately left my device at home but instead
brought paper and pen. This is what I drew while waiting for the show to
start.</i></i></div>
</td><td class="tr-caption"></td><td class="tr-caption"><span style="font-size: 12.8px;"><br /></span></td><td class="tr-caption"><span style="font-size: 12.8px;"><br /></span></td><td class="tr-caption"><br /><i style="font-size: 12.8px;">
</i></td><td class="tr-caption"><span style="font-size: 12.8px;"><i><br /></i></span></td><td class="tr-caption"><i><br /></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is so much talk about social media being addictive; I've caught myself mindlessly scrolling for what turns out to be hours (after getting an update that tracks usage) looking for that special something. I don't even know what that something is, although the words "instant gratification" come to mind. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And yet, through all that wasted time, gems have come through--ideas, articles, book reviews, knowledge, new perspectives, beautiful people, neighbourhood friends--real treasures. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Putting away devices forever is not for me. There are so many positives I would miss out on, including what I am doing right now, which is thinking, writing, sharing my thoughts (although it's entirely possible only the the bots are listening) but the fb addiction, well that gives me hamster brain. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm trying to figure out how to keep up the good and throw out the bad. Revisiting, and visiting blogs, your blogs, is a start. Seeking out thoughtful writing, wherever I can find it, efficiently. It's that last word, that facebook fails at, so if you write a little tome on fb tag me so I can find you. If you blog, keep an online journal, post essays, please please please, keep me in the loop.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am not alone. Some tidbits of wisdom from the globe.</div>

All I want for Christmas is Books Books Books.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
...and not just books, but books on paper, books with heft and weight, books you can hold, pages to flip, that exude that smell of freshly inked paper, the "snick" sound of aflipped page, a thing on the shelf that patiently awaits your return, the object you can hand off to a friend for an unlimited loan and eventually get back for a second reading, that sort of book. Books on paper, that can be read, looked at, ignored, collected, and need no batteries or third party apps to be read.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span id="react-root">Homeward Bound. It's dark before I'm home
from my evening walk at this time of year. The geese spend their days in
my neighbourhood, either by shores of the lake, or gleaning corn from
the harvested fields. They stay until the very last hint of dusk before
leaving for their overnight grounds, southward on the shore of Lake
Ontario. They are noisy flyers, having their conversations on the wing,
which turns the gathering dusk into a bit of party as they fly on by.</span><br />
<span id="react-root">I love the way they fill the night sky joyful noise; it's hard to feel alone with all that babble passing overhead.</span><br />

<span id="react-root">This week, also have been treated to migrating sandhill cranes. If you've never heard a sandhill crane, you are missing out. They sound like aliens, I just can't describe, but it's wonderful. Trout Run, ballpoint pen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Every year, late October, November, the brook trout appear in Vivian Creek. I love to peer into the crystal water, and watch for them to emerge into view beneath the ripples. They are obscured, distorted, blended into the patterns above and below, it is a challenge to find them, but once found, they dart and shimmer with colour, brilliant brick red, pearl white and sandy tan, and you wonder how you could possibly miss them in the first place. Trout run is here, take a look, see nothing? Take a closer look. Look for movement, seek and find.</div>
