Ingrid Schmelter, A.O.C.A.
I am a graduate of the Ontario College of Art where I studied photography, print-making and figure drawing as part of the General Studies Program, 1984 to 1988.
I continue my artistic pursuits, participating in art shows, print-making exchanges, weekly life-drawing sessions and maintaining a strong internet presence. With continuous experimentation, printmaking has become my primary vehicle of artistic expression.
I print without a press and have no interest in emulating the machined perfection of modern printing methods. When producing monoprints, I celebrate the unpredictable nature of the hand-pressed process, exploring variations of repetitive elements by combining relief linocuts, polystyrene foam plate and found objects with planographic print-making on gelatine plates. My prints are abstract, densely layered and textured works of art, adding representational or decorative elements to draw the viewer in for further contemplation. The organic process of creating these monoprints is one of continuous experimentation and exploration, producing a rich textural image that leaves ample scope for discovery by the viewer.
